Death in the Freezer

Sunday morning I opened our freezer to get my smoothie going and I was startled by this:

At first it seriously seemed like some animal had been brutally murdered in our freezer. Then I looked a little closer and saw the broken bottle Rick put in there the night before. I remembered when he did it and said "Em, remind me to take this out in three minutes." Oops. My inner clock failed me, I guess I should have set our timer.

Hello Flagstaff

A few weeks ago our little family moved from beautiful Boulder to another beautiful town... Flagstaff. Rick got a job out here doing marketing and communication work for a startup company, so we're definitely grateful for that given that the job market is still so crazy. It is definitely an adjustment from Boulder; we miss our friends, biking to the farmers market on the weekends, having such a variety of amazing natural grocery stores and being able to take Adelaide swimming anytime, but we are excited to be here and to explore Flagstaff. It is really pretty here in the summer and the weather is mild and pleasant (unlike other parts of Arizona). We have already found a midwife that we are excited about and are looking forward to meeting our Arizona baby in a few months :)

20 Weeks

I can't believe I am already half way through this pregnancy! I seriously feel like time is flying by but I'm enjoying every minute of it. From the kicks I can already tell that this baby is a little gentler than Adelaide. She would kick in spurts really aggressively while this baby gives more gentle kicks all throughout the day. We just had the 20 week ultrasound and it was so fun to watch the baby give us a little show. He kept bringing his hands up to his mouth and kicking and punching and at one point he even did a slow little back flip trick causing the ultrasound technician to call him "yoga baby." I know I just referred to the baby as a he, but that is just because saying "it" over and over gets a little annoying. We still don't know the baby's gender, when they were checking out down there they had Rick and I look away and chat. We have brainstormed a few names though; for a boy we like Cash (it is a family name on Rick's side of the family) or Bentley, and for a girl we like Caroline or Clementine. Any thoughts?

Sorry these are a little blurry, they are taken from our phones... I really should learn how to use our scanner.

Here are a couple belly pictures of me at 20 weeks. I have the best husband ever who kept Adelaide for five days while I went back to San Diego for my sister's graduation and to spend time with family. It was a great trip made up of multiple breakfast burritos, lots of giggle fests, a relaxing bed and breakfast stay, planking sessions and trips to the beach.

From the front I think I just look like I ate a few too many donuts.

I ♥ Justin's Butter

I haven't been blogging lately because I have been too busy eating this:

Seriously, it is so delicious. It's like Nutella but way better- it has one third the sugar, no hydrogenated oils or dairy and actually tastes like hazelnuts. I plan to try it in banana crepes soon but for now I'll just keep eating it by the spoonful.

Big Sis

I'm getting excited to watch Adelaide interact with baby #2 when it arrives. Although she is quite aggressive in general I sometimes notice a sweet and soft side to her when we are around other babies and especially when she plays with her baby dolls. It will be interesting to see how she deals with the real thing come October :) Do any of you mothers out there have advice for helping a child transition to being an older sibling?

Adelaide always has one of her baby dolls with her.

Tucked Away

DSC_0159
Adelaide's favorite hiding place

DSC_0157

For some reason Adelaide is a fan of situating herself in abnormal places around the house. When everything gets quiet, I can usual count on finding Adelaide hiding behind the shower curtain, tucked away inside my closet, sitting in some kind of bucket or playing beneath the oven in the drawer that opens up. She always gives me a guilty giggle whenever I find her and it makes me laugh every time. I hope she grows out of this trait eventually so as a teenager she doesn't spend her free time in car trunks and closets.

Happy Birthday Rick!

IMG_0285

Earlier this week we celebrated Rick's 29th birthday. I can't believe I'm married to such an old man who will be 30 in one year! Rick has been so busy finishing up his final semester of grad school (today is his last final!), searching for a job, and getting things finished up at his current job so he didn't really want a big celebration for his birthday this year. I arranged for our friend Ruthie to watch Adelaide so we could go out to dinner or a movie but instead we just drove around aimlessly for a long time; Rick's brain was too fried to even make a dinner decision except for rejecting all my ideas. We finally ended up picking up chicken wings from one place and bread rolls (and a salad for me) from another and coming home to eat it in the comfort of our own home while watching the movie Fair Game (which we both highly recommend!). We also pigged out on Ben & Jerry's and a delicious Chantilly Cake. All in all it was a great night, mostly because we just got to relax together, which hasn't been too frequent of an occurrence lately:) Love you Rick, Happy Birthday!
